Why I am the Swiss Army knife of copywriting
Degree in Journalism (Ryerson University)
Learned the art of story-telling through brutal, unrelenting editing by professional journalists. Painful. Humbling. Invaluable.
Public Relations Writer (Two years)
Learned how to apply my journalism training to speech writing, annual reports, employee communications and press releases.
Corporations Communications Writer (Six years)
Refined the copywriting lessons learned in my first position. Learned how to craft messaging for widely different audiences. Exercised my writing muscles.
Advertising Agency copywriter (Four years)
Worked on a variety of accounts, including the first campaigns for Hyundai (You have come a long way, baby!). Learned how to work for different clients with widely varying copywriting needs and expectations.
Advertising agency owner and creative director for 30 years.
Created Words at Work Advertising and Marketing Inc. to give small and emerging businesses professional advertising support at a price well below what was being demanded by top advertising agencies. Operated on the film production company model (a few full time employees and a host of sub contractors).
Seemed to work as my humble little shop survived for over a quarter century. Always tried to subcontract copywriting, but could never find a freelance writer who was worth the money. So now I am going to do it.
